Romantic Rubik's Cube

I'm super excited about today's post because I put A LOT of work into it. I have a backache to prove it (from leaning over this project for several hours yesterday). So, if I only get a few comments on this baby, I'm afraid I'll do something drastic (....like delete this blog!) :)

I thought I'd break away from my traditional posting and do an actual tutorial for all you who like a fun craft project now and then. Here it is, my friends. Enjoy!

{I plan to open a "Love Actually Boutique" soon...watch for these!}

So, it's really not very hard...just takes a little bit of time, but it turned out so cute (although, I am biased.) Unfortunately, I'm not a rubik's master, so until I am, this will be proudly displayed on a bookshelf in my office.

This project does not have to be limited to wedding pictures...obviously, BUT, be creative!

This would be great for:

- Stocking Stuffer
- Home Decoration
- Gift for a spouse who enjoys puzzles
- Bridal shower or small wedding gift (using pics of the couple)
- Father's Day/Mother's Day

Black & White Photos could make this really classy...

What would YOU use this project for?

PERFECT! We even had an old cube in the toy chest. Thanks for the inspiration!!!

I think this is a cute little idea. I would definitely just use it for deocration purposes due to the fact that it's not 1987 and I have NO idea how to even begin solving a rubiks cube.

Cher said...

Ya, Ditto, Courtney.

And, again, I can't thank you all enough for your comments...makes me feel like a 5 year old at Christmas!...or something. :) Keep em comin!

I am LOVING this idea! I am so gonna try it for his birthday in a couple of weeks! I got him a rubix cube for Christmas last year and he hasn't touched it, so maybe this will inspire you! I love your gift ideas. I made him a rice crispy treat hershey kiss the other night and he loved it!

Way cool!!! I think I might have to go and do this really soon. I try to do something cute and sweet for my husband at least once a month and this would absolutely qualify!! I have so many fun ideas for it now. I could do it with the baby pictures I just took of my friends baby!! Thanks so much for this!!

I have been visiting your site for a while and had yet to comment even though I have loved EVERYTHING you have done. But this tops it all. My husband loves the Rubix Cube and says he loved it as a child.
This would be the most perfect stocking stuffer for Christmas. I'm always brainstorming cute ideas for Christmas...and this is it! Thank you!

Ashley Dudley said...

LOVE this idea :) thanks!

I love it! I think it would be perfect for father's day with the kids' pictures on it (even better if you have 6 kids). Can't wait to try it!

Melissa said...

I am sooooo doing that! I love it! Hmmmm....my husband's birthday is coming up...but it'd be a great anniversary gift...we fell in love when I spent hours teaching him how to do a rubiks cube...it would be a great back to our beginings reminder. Thanks!

Scott and Manda said...

My husband solves a rubiks cube in under 2 minutes, so this will be a cute way to make it a bit more challenging for him! I think I'll take your suggestion of using it as a stocking stuffer this year... :)
Thanks for this post!

Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice said...

WOW I love this! This might make a great anniversary gift this year since we have ZERO money.

YOU are a gorgeous bride! You are so creative and talented and I love this idea. Did you say a "love actually boutique???" I may go bankrupt!!!

Andrea said...

Oh my gosh, I'm pretty much in LOVE with this idea. It is soooo cute and actually seems like it is something I could do!! I love it! I will absolutely be doing that and I'm not a Rubuk's cube master either (or even someone who can do it at all) so I will not be messing this up ever!!! thanks for the ideas! I love them!!

Super cute idea. My husband is super hard to shop for this sounds like it would make a great stocking stuffer for him!

So so cute!! I love it!

Krystal said...

My husband loves Rubiks cubes, and he is really good at them. This would be a cute idea for Christmas. Does the cube still twist, after you modge-podge glue the pictures on?

Cher said...

Krystal---it does still twist. I let the modge-podge dry for about 5 minutes, and then I twisted just to break up the glueyness that got down inside. And then after it was all finished, I kept twisting every hour or so just to make sure it really didn't get stuck. Luckily, modge-podge isn't a super bonder.

So cute! I just saw rubix cubes at Michaels in the dollar area. Great gift!

I'm glad my wife doesn't know about this blog, because I'm totally doing this for her for Christmas! We decided to do a home made Christmas this year, and I've been having trouble coming up with ideas. Love Rubix cube rocks!! One change I will make to feel more masculine as I do this though, is to use JB Weld to put the pictures on. :)

TwoHeartsTogether said...

wow that is cool!

Cher said...

hahaha--Michael, I'm glad your wife doesn't know either. I'm sure she'll love this...and how impressed will she be that you did this for her?! Good luck with the JP Weld!

KandK said...

My husband at one time knew how to solve this thing....I think for our 20th anniversary (next summer) I will make one and put pictures of us on it of some of our favorite times together! Thanks so much!!

Shari said...

oh, I might use this for my hubby AND for Christmas gifts for our parents. I'll use pictures of the two kids for a couple sides, pictures of me and my hub for a couple sides, and maybe cute sayings or something for the other two! I'll check my Michaels' dollar bin. :D

Kathryn said...

WOW! I love this! You are so creative!! :)

My husband IS a Rubik cube master, so I think this would be a great little romantic gift for him! I love this blog, so fun!

Quick question. Did you use regular paper for this project or did you use photo paper?

Cher said...

Photo paper....it works better than regular paper I thought.

Marie said...

Super cute! And I love the idea of kids' photos. Black and white baby photos would be great for a nursery decoration.

Cool idea! Now I'm trying to remember where it was that I saw cubes at last week (Hobby Lobby?)! My husband asked for a rubik's cube a few years ago for Christmas, I got him one, but this would be a neat one to add to his collection, maybe with my kids' pictures on them.

Natalie said...

Amazing!!! I am in LOVE with this idea!! I have been searching for a gift for my brother (he'll be away for 2 years) that would hold pictures of his nieces and nephew and this is PERFECT for him because he is a rubiks cube master!!! Thanks SO much for sharing this idea!! I know he will just LOVE it!!

Mega nerdy, but I love it! My husband and I can both solve the cube, so this would be a new challenge. :)

I am about to make these. What type of adhesive do you recommend to adhere the pictures on to the little squares? I don't want them to pop off. Thanks so much for the great idea. I come from a Rubik's cube family and these will be great.

Sarah said...

I made one for my hunny for his stocking... I used a cheap dollar store rubix cube and some pictures I took of his favorite parts of my body... So much fun! GREAT idea!

My husband is big into rubiks cube and I showed him this and he really wanted me to make him one. Maybe this summer when I have more time on my hands. Thanks for the tutorial!

Lena K. said...

Thanks for this cute idea! I made it today for my hubby for our anniversary. I saved time by using spray adhesive on the whole pictures, then cutting with an exacto knife down each groove, then mod podging. It's not as perfect looking as cutting out each square, but I had limited time (I procrastinated), so it helped!

Christine Peterson said...

Super cute idea! Thanks for sharing! I'll totally make this :)

Unknown said...

awesome idea...i loved it!!!..thanks for sharing..wanted to know ,did you cut each square sized portion nd then stick them respectively??..u used glue to stick them or do we need anything so that it lasts longer????

Nice post. I learn something more challenging on different blogs everyday. It will always be stimulating to read content from other writers and practice a little something from their store. I’d prefer to use some with the content on my blog whether you don’t mind. I’ll give you a link on your web blog. I recently came to know about http://toysuae.com/, their Rubix Cubes are very effective.
